| Demolition of 12 shops on forest land sparks protest | | | | Jammu, May 20: A strong protest demonstration was held following twelve shops, including a bar-cum-restaurant, built on forest land were demolished today by forest department officials in Nagrota. A team of forest department officials demolished twelve establishments constructed on forest land in Ban Nagrota in outskirts of Jammu, an official spokesman said. The drive was launched following National Highway authorities asked Forest Department to vacate the land belonged to Forest Department. With the demolition of the shops, about 4 kanals of forest land was retrieved. The retrieved land was diverted to highway for four-laning of road, he said. However, seizure sparked protest as the protestors levelling allegations against Forest Department said that their shops were constructed about twenty years back with consent from Forest Department. They demanded compensation for the loss. The protestors were joined by BJP workers and accordingly phone calls to newly elected MP from area Jugal Kishore was made, but his phone remained switch off. They were pacified after the intervention of police. |
