SRINAGAR, June 29: Hailing decision of the Union Government to provide telephone and other basic facilities to the traders engaged in the cross LoC trade, patron of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today emphasized on the need of taking some effective steps to win hearts and minds of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. "Decision to provide telephone and other facilities to the cross LoC traders is endorsement of PDP's stand because we have been demanding that adequate infrastructure should be developed to further boost this trade", Mufti said while addressing a function to welcome senior National Conference leader, Tariq Mohiuddin, who joined PDP along with hundreds of his supporters today. Terming opening of Line of Control (LoC) for the movement of goods and people as biggest the ever Confidence Building Measure (CBM) to improve relation between India and Pakistan, Mufti reminded that PDP has been demanding to institutionalize the cross LoC trade by providing normal trading facilities. He said that telephone, banking, financial and other normal trade related facilities were essential for the traders of both the countries so as take maximum benefit of this CBM. Observing that dealing with the problem of Kashmir is a biggest challenge before the BJP led NDA Government headed by Narendra Modi, Mufti reiterated his demand that holistic approach should be adoptedby the new government to win hearts and minds of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. "There is need to create jobs avenues for the unemployed youth of the State", he said and hoped that new government would follow the path shown by former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. He lavished all praise on Atal Behari Vajpayee for initiating historic steps to normalize relations between India and Pakistan. "Only a leader like the stature of Vajpayee can take such historic initiative", Mufti said. Recalling former Prime Minister's speech at Srinagar on April 18, 2003 wherein he had extended hands of friendship towards Pakistan at the time when there was eyeball to eyeball situation on the borders. "Had Vajpayee not taken that historic step, there would have been no peace on the borders", he observed. "In 2002 we had only 16 members but still we had pursued the peace process with determination and commitment and established peace in this region. It was all due to the credibility of the PDP that previous NDA regime headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee had whole heartedly supported whatever initiatives taken by us for restoring peace in this region", he said. Mufti said that PDP's goal was to ensure inclusive political and economic empowerment of the people of J&K in a positively evolving Indo-Pak arrangement. Regretting that National Conference led coalition regime during the last six years has created chaos in the state, Mufti said that most of the problems J&K is facing today are because of NC's lust for power.
