| As PDP works overtime, Abdullah's embark on ill-timed vacation | | | Abodh Sharma
Jammu, June 29: Abdullahs' present overseas sojourn could not have been more ill timed. At a time when opposition PDP is working overtime to ensure its best performance in the upcoming Assembly elections; At a time when crucial Shri Amaranth yatra is on and at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the state on his maiden visit after assuming office, both Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and party patriarch Farooq Abdullah who was reported to have taken the reigns of the party in his hands after crushing defeat in the Parliamentary elections have deemed it fit to embark on summer vacation abroad. The indifference of NC's top leadership at a crucial point in time is being seen as if it has conceded the battle to PDP and the BJP without even giving them a fight. "On one hand, the PDP leadership is working overtime in reaching out to people, finalizing candidates for the Assembly elections and projecting its political relevance to the newly elected union government in resolving pressing issues confronting the state, on the other, NC's top leadership has chosen to call it vacation time," said a former MLA, adding, "This is reflection of complacency or total surrender". It is pertinent to mention here that the ruling National Conference had been defeated on over 40 assembly segments while losing all three Lok Sabha seats from the valley to the PDP and despite announcing series of populist measures post poll debacle, things are not looking rosy for NC and its alliance partner Congress, which also lost both the Lok Sabha seats from Jammu to BJP. "Things are so bad for the NC, that it is not able to identify safe seats for both Omar and Farooq to contest Assembly elections," said the former legislator. Besides the existing political situation in the state; which by all means warrants not only the presence but the proactive participation of father-son duo in managing affairs of the party that was in complete disarray following crushing defeat; the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, which faces multiple threats also calls for the presence of CM in the capital. The holiday of Abdullahs is also ill timed in view of the maiden visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 4, during which he is scheduled to inaugurate several projects including rail link to Katra. |
