Early Times Report Jammu, June 29: A few days after BJP MP from Udhampur-Doda and Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh projected a demand for an India Institute of Technology (IIT) in Jammu before Minister for Human Resource Development Smriti Irani besides a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Doda, ruling National Conference is trying to bite into the credit stating that the demands were originally projected by it. National Conference during UPA regime had projected a case before the Union Government for setting up of a Central University and an IIM for Jammu and Srinagar respectively, but later, following vehement protests, Jammu was also granted a central university as in valley and in the process, the state lost the promised IIM. However, owing to indifference and apathy of the government and the state administration, the central university of Jammu has still not been made fully functional. Now that the fresh demand for an IIT has been made by Dr. Jitendra Singh, a Union Minister himself, hopes are soaring high across the region that the prestigious institution might see the light of the day soon. "J-K has tremendous potential to produce young meritorious technocrats, but there is no IIT in the state. Jammu, with its geographical and logistical advantages, is an ideal location for the setting up of such an institute," Jitendra Singh told HRD Minister Smriti Irani a few days ago when he called on her. Singh, the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions handed over a proposal in this regard to the Minister for HRD. While Irani assured Singh that she will pursue the matter in right earnest, how soon the premier institute becomes a reality for the people of Jammu would be interesting to note. |
