Solid waste management still a challenge in flood hit Srinagar | | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Oct12; Even though the solid waste management in the flood hit Srinagar city is going on full swing, extra machinery has been pressed into service to cater the demand, but it remains the biggest challenge for the authorities. Since September 6, a record 962 metric tonnes of solid waste is being lifted on daily basis from flood hit areas of Srinagar city which is managed at Achan in city outskirts. Though the government claims that efforts are afoot for solid waste management round the clock, however, the ground situation is going from bad to worst only because whatever material inside the flood ravaged has been converted into solid waste by the flood waters. The flooring including costly carpets is particularly the biggest source of solid waste. In Rajbagh, Jawahernagar, Wazirbagh and Gogjibagh areas each residential house produces solid waste in tonnes as the household goods especially the valuable floorings have been converted into solid waste by the floods. Data available with the Early Times highlight that from September 26 till date, 2000 metric tonnes of solid waste is being lifted and managed on daily basis. Despite these record figures, the solid waste management continues to be the biggest challenges. In areas where structures remsined inundated for more than 15 days everything has changed into garbage. Barring walls everything present inside is solid waste. In historical Lal Chowk and civil lines areas goods of all kinds have changed into heaps of garbage. Experts suggest that the administration should import machinery from outside the state to cater the demand. Meanwhile solid waste collected from areas like Lasjan, Padshahibagh, Soiteng, Nawgam and many other flood hit areas is being reportedly dumped alongside Pantha Chowk- Nawgam bypass posing a great threat to the human life. People have been demanding that the solid waste collected from these areas should also be managed at Achan. ERA officials maintain that waste being received under normal condition upto 3pm. Under extra ordinary conditions all types of waste is being received round the clock. According to the ERA officials extra machinery has been deployed at site to cater to the demand. The operation is being managed by deployment of men, machinery and material round the clock. |
