Kulgam, Oct 12: Outraged at illegal extraction of sand from Nallah Vishoo here in South Kashmir, residents of flood-hit areas of Kulgam district have demanded immediate action against the people involved in this illegal trade.
Illegal sand extraction from the Nallah Vishoo near Mah, Mahgund, Nowpora Kulgam and adjoining villages is posing a threat to the embankments, locals said. They said a few contractors in nexus with the officials of Fisheries and Geology Mining Department have started carrying out the illegal sand extraction again after the devastating floods. They said that district administration which is already aware of the fact that the illegal sand extraction devastated all those villages located on the banks of Nallah as it changed its course due to illegal sand and bolt extraction.
Locals alleged that administration has not paid any heed towards their repeated pleas to stop the sand extraction in these areas.
"Several times before floods we approached district administration anddemanded action against the sand extractors but administration paid no heed towards our requests." Mohammad Ashraf a resident of Mah Gund told Early Times. He said that it was because of this illegal sand extraction that very recently floods washed away several residential houses and large patches of agriculture land of their village.
"Revenue, of Fisheries and Geology Mining Department is directly involved in this illegal trade, before floods devastated our villages, officers of these department used to visit our village frequently and raid the sand extractors. On several occasion I am witness to corrupt practices in which those officers indulge." said Ashraf. Locals said that several officers of these three departments have flashed nexus with sand extractors due to which administration isn't taking any action against them. Locals alleged that apart from enjoying the support of corrupt officials, they are also enjoying the support of few local politicians.
"Now after knowing the very fact that due to sand extraction, Nallah Vishoo changed its course during recent floods, they have started extracting sand by using lightweight machines and have started digging deep into the nallah." Locals said. They said that if the same situation continues the villages located on its banks will again suffer heavy damages. They urged Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to initiate action against the culprits.
