Postponement of exams gives Govt teachers feel of freedom from "discomfort" | | | Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, Oct 12: The government decision to defer examinations up to the higher secondary level for 2013- 2014 session till March 2015 has given teachers a feel of freedom from discomfort and anxiety involved in their day to day work in schools. The government school teachers, who were not affected by the September rains and the resultant floods, have already become less burdensome after the deluge inundated the valley. The syllabus of all the subjects is almost complete. Since the exam dates stand postponed now, students will prefer to sit homes and prepare for their exams. They will not like to waste their time by unnecessarily taking rounds of their schools. And, if some of them happen to visit their schools, they will be coming only to consult their teachers over some important issues. So, the time for teachers is now to relax and not to feel the pressure of work and anxiety. The government decision, according to experts, is unwelcoming as there is the possibility of some teachers exploiting the situation in their favour by opening private tution centres. It is felt that the government, which failed to handle the situation created by the recent rains and floods in the state, may also fail to take action against the teachers who were found exploiting the valley students. There have already been allegations of 'dereliction of duty' against some government teachers. Now, when exams have been deferred and students were also not expected to regularly come to schools, this set of teachers may not at all attend schools, feel senior officers of education department."The exam postponement is also going to result in the loss of precious six months of students' career," said Shabir Ahmad, a parent. "During these six months, students will be totally idle and can also pick up bad habits," he felt.Shabir made an important point when he said parents of the students studying in private schools would now have to pay extra fee of six months. "This will be an extra burden on them," he added and asked the government if it would share this burden. The general feeling here is that government is so frustrated that it decides something on one day and changes it the other day. The coalition government is unable to cope with the situation, people feel. |
