Politicians deaf to public outcry as Jammu- Akhnoor road gorges precious lives
Four-lanning project lost in oblivion

Jammu, Oct 12: Political insensitivity, coupled with administrative red tape, is responsible for tens of fatal accidents on the 27 kilometers stretch of road between Jammu and Akhnoor whose four lanning has been put on hold despite pressing need and huge public outcry.
705 road accident cases were registered in the sub divisions of Domana and Akhnoor as a result of which 90 persons were killed and 1008 others got injured in them during the last two years.
Heavy concentration of population has been witnessed towards the eastern stretch of the city coupled with establishment of several important residential localities, educational institutions and commercial hubs which have resulted in a multiple increase in volume of traffic on this road, rendering it pathetically inadequate and hence prone to mishaps.
The issue has been raised in the State Legislative Assembly several times during the last two years and the former MP from Jammu-Poonch constituency Madan Lal Sharma had been assuring early take off of the project, but an year later, nothing seems to be happening except the number of the dead and the injured registering an increase every month.
Sources said that the Army had been raising objections to the four lanning project but, with the persuasion of the Former MP, the Army had acceded to the requests of the civilian authorities considering the pressing need of the project. Chief Engineer, Project Sampark, prepared a proposal for the upgradation of the two lane road to 4-laning status. "The Chief Engineer, Sampark had confirmed the requirement of 4-lanning of the road alongiwth the viability of construction to the Directorate General of Border roads Organization" confirmed top source in R&B.
Meanwhile, as the project of huge public importance continues to be shelved, vested interests are further making things dangerous by allowing encroachments and idle parking on the sides of already constricted road. "Traffic policemen who have been deployed here to clear the traffic mess allow fruit vendors to encroach the highway in huge numbers and also allow idle parking of trucks, cranes and sundry on either side of the road endangering precious lives for petty gains" said Triloki nath, a resident of Shakti Nagar locality on the Highway.
It is pertinent to mention here that the state BJP is seeking grant of tourist city status to Jammu city advocating the fact that it is the only city in North India where more than 10 million pilgrims including tourists, come every year, but with the a BJP MP in place, the project has still failed to take off. It is pertinent to mention here that PDP-led coalition govt under the leadership of Mufti Mohd Sayeed were very keen to start this project, but the charge of guards in state in 2008, changed the whole scenario.
