`NC ignored Srinagar but where has it invested' | | | ET Report JAMMU, Oct 18: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders are out with a new strategy that is definitely going to make an impact. They accused National Conference of ignoring Srinagar. Two years ago, the PDP general secretary, Dilawar Mir while levelling similar allegations had said that the no developmental activity was undertaken in Srinagar especially in Down Town since 1975. "It was during PDP regime that Eidgah was fenced and decorated", he said. A businessman from Down Town voiced his concern in the following words: "The condition of old city is glaring example of NC's apathy. All the roads are in dilapidated condition and area gets rotational power supply in summer and winters. On rainy days the roads and lanes remain submerged for long time due to faulty drainage system." Pertinently was during PDP led coalition Government that the flyover was constructed in record time and banks of river Jhelum were repaired and beautified and other developmental works were undertaken at a fast pace, giving whole Srinagar a new attractive look. Srinagar is believed to be a strong bastion of National Conference. During the 2008 Assembly elections, the NC bagged all the 10 seats from Srinagar. And, if NC has been ignoring Srinagar then where has it worked. Curiously the Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram during his `joyride' around old city in 2011 sought reasons for dilapidated roads and drains. He was told that no developmental work could be undertaken due to 2010 unrest. Jammu has always rejected National Conference. It is a strong hold of Congress. However, during the Parliamentary elections, Congress was almost wiped out by BJP. NC is not generous enough to develop areas where its opponents live. As long as South Kashmir is concerned, the PDP has dealt a severe blow to NC. The ruling coalition partner, therefore, is not expected to develop south Kashmir either. North Kashmir towns are as shabby as the winter capital. So, where has the National Conference invested? Will the Chief Minister explain? |
