Propose Third Front before saying goodbye to Omar

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 18: As the Election Commission of India is all set to take a final call on the timing of the forthcoming Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir, political activities in the flood ravaged Valley are picking up.
Sources told Early Times that people who have deserted ruling National Conference in the recent past are finalizing modalities with a few NC leaders to shift their loyalties. However, the NC leaders who want to leave the party are of the opinion that people in Kashmir need an alternative which is free from the interference of Abdullah family.
A source said that NC leaders want to come up with a "Third Front" comprising of the rebels and a few influential local leaders who have a following and can win a few seats in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
A politician said that NC leaders are not in the favour of leaving the ruling party and joining Awami National Conference led by Khalida Shah, sister of the NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah. "Somehow we want to get rid of the family politics. During all these years we have promoted Family Raaj in Jammu and Kashmir. Now we want to break the shackles and do something for our people," the politician added.
He said if elections are held on time then there is every possibility of such people deserting the ruling party who would not get the mandate. "They are likely to contest the elections as independent and if a few of them emerge victorious they can re-group and play their role in next Government formation," he added.
"During the past six years NC leaders have not been able to do much for the people of the areas they hail from. Their credibility is at stake and they are not in a position to approach their own people and ask for votes," the politician added.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said that NC rebels have many reasons for saying goodbye to Omar Abdullah and his party. "Many seniors have been ignored by the party leadership and the dictorial approach of the party top brass has disillusioned them ," the analyst added.
He said that forthcoming Assembly elections irrespective of when these would be held would prove to be an uphill task for the ruling party. "Neither people are happy with them nor are their activists. The humiliating defeat suffered by the ruling party in the Parliamentary elections has proved that NC has lost ground in Kashmir. Now the Kashmir based leaders are making an attempt to somehow safeguard their political careers. They know it very well that NC has no future that's why they are mulling a Third Front comprising of NC rebels," the analyst added.
A source said that a few NC rebels are already in touch with the BJP leaders in New Delhi and are seeking their support to make their plans work.
BJP emerging as a strong alternative in the Jammu region and winning most of the Assembly segments in the recent Parliamentary elections is making party leaders believe that they have an outside chance of forming the next Government in the state. A few NC rebels are understood to have told the BJP leaders that if Centre supports their endeavor they can win a few seats for them in the Valley and can later help the BJP to form the next Government in Jammu and Kashmir.
