| Toeing NC's agenda, a BJP faction for deferment of Assembly polls | | |

JAMMU, Oct 18: Although Chief Election Commissioner of India V S Sampath today dropped hints to conduct Assembly elections in time in Jammu and Kashmir, some BJP leaders are still trying to convince the high command that polls should be deferred. This faction of the BJP leaders is of the view that postponement of Assembly elections would help the party to further strengthen its base.
Credible sources in the BJP said that a faction within the party was toeing line of ruling National Conference as far as Assembly elections in the State are concerned. This faction has argued before the high command that deferment in the Assembly elections would help the party to strengthen its base in the flood affected areas where Central Government has already started relief and rescue operation in the big way.
Credible sources said that those who are arguing deferment of the Assembly elections are also hob-nobbing with the J&K National Conference which is also against conducting polls at this point of time.
It is believed that a faction within the BJP is still under the influence of J&K National Conference and this faction is trying to get the elections delayed.
Officially, the BJP delegation which met teams of Election Commission of India at Jammu and Srinagar had not opposed elections at this time but still a faction has been clandestinely working overtime to get the election postponed to fulfil agenda of the J&K National Conference.
Postponement of elections at this time would only endorse stand taken by the J&K National Conference and BJP is not going to get any benefit from it but this faction in the party is more concerned about J&K National Conference instead of their own party.
Insiders in the BJP revealed that this faction has also suggested the high command that party should keep its option open for entering into post-poll alliance with any party. This faction is also trying to bring J&K National Conference leadership close to the BJP high command. This faction is trying to convince the high command that J&K National Conference is only secular and nationalist party in Kashmir valley so high command should keep this party in good humour. |
