Why 'conflict-managers' ignore Jammu? | Floods, devastation | | Rustam JAMMU, Oct 18: Jammu, like Kashmir, also suffered heavy losses in September due to the incessant rains and the resultant floods. In fact, the flood fury caused more loss to the people of Jammu province in terms of human lives and properties, both private and public. Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch, Udhampur and Ramban districts were the worst-hit. Nearly 200 people in Jammu lost their lives, one village completely disappeared from the state's map, roads measuring hundreds of kilometers were damaged and hundreds of school buildings suffered losses and so on. Many bridges were either washed away or got damaged. Standing crops worth crores of rupees were destroyed, thus making the life of small and marginal farmers in Jammu a veritable hell on earth. As for Kashmir, parts of Srinagar city and a few other places were the worst-hit areas. These areas remained under water for many days. Many houses were damaged. Several kacha houses also collapsed. The floods disrupted all the economic activities for days together, thus adding to the difficulties of the people. Indeed, the loss in Kashmir caused by floods was also colossal. It is sad that many a "conflict-manager", who have been visiting the state for an on-the-spot assessment or making statements from Delhi and elsewhere have not thought it prudent to adopt a holistic approach. "Conflict-manager", "champions" of human rights and "opinion-makers" Dilip Padgaonkar, Seema Mustafa and many others have been only visiting Srinagar a few other parts of the Valley. They are focusing only on Kashmir and trying to convey an impression as if the whole of Kashmir stands ravaged and devastated that needed to be rebuilt. They are urging the Government of India to give to the affected people of Kashmir maximum possible financial help. They are also asking New Delhi to allow international aid for the flood-victims in the Valley. They are feeling so concerned with Kashmir. Put in as much effort as you can to find if any of them have even once uttered a word of sympathy for the flood-affected people in Jammu province, you will come out of the exercise minus everything. Not even once any of them shared the pain of the people of Jammu province. For them the people of Jammu province do not matter. That they would discriminate between the flood victims of Jammu province and Srinagar and certain adjoining areas only shows how biased they are against Jammu. It doesn't matter. People of Jammu province have been fending for themselves since 1947 and they have the capacity to live with all kinds of situations. |
