Separatists relish giving calls for shutdown | | |
Occasion or no occasion Kashmiri separatists have developed a relish for giving a call for shutdowns.Since most of the separatist leaders are educated and well versed in the political history of Jammu and Kashmir they have not to scan books or magazines for finding out right dates for giving call for a shutdown and for staging protest demonstrations. It seemed that these separatists had done their duty when they, soon after the Assembly election schedule was announced, gave a call to people in Kashmir to abstain from participating in the poll process. No those who had believed so were wrong because on Sunday they had given a call for general strike and shutdown in protest against the landing of the Indian Army in Kashmir on October 27,1947.And their call evoked a mixed reaction but on the whole normal life was paralysed in various parts of the Kashmir valley.Difficulties for people were aggravated when the state authorities imposed restriction on movement of people and when protesters clashed with the police forcing the latter to resort to lathicharge and teargassing.Giving a call for shutdown to protest against the landing of the Indian Army in Kashmir 67 years ago has been part of the regular drill during the last several years. And this drill has been strictly followed soon after the rise of Pakistan sponsored insurgency in Kashmir in 1988-89.And these separatists believe that by triggering breezy violence and by enforcing shutdown they had succeeded in bringing the Kashmir issue on the international scene. And whatever was left undone was done by a Kashmiri youth who held a solo sit-in at Srinagar demanding implementation of the UN resolution on Kashmir.Thank God he wanted both India and Pakistan to honour and implement the UN resolution which provides for holding a plebiscite for determining the wishes of people of Jammu and Kashmir. The youth was detained by the police which could give another issue to separatists while clamouring over violation of human rights by the police and security forces in Kashmir. One wishes to ask these separatists simply one question. Did the Indian Army land in Kashmir on October 27,1947 illegally ? Did not the then Maharaja of Kashmir,Hari Singh, requested New Delhi for sending the Army to push back Pakistani raiders who had resorted to loot and murder while reaching the outskirts of Srinagar city ? When the first batch of the Indian troops landed in Srinagar who cheered them ? If these separatists check their record they would find out that several thousand people, most of them muslims, men, women and children, cheered the landing of Indian troops. There were bigger cheers when the Pakistani raiders, who had taken shelter in areas on the outskirts of Srinagar were flushed out in strafing by the Indian Air Force copters. How long the separatists will keep on mourning over the landing of Indian Army in Kashmir, over the state's accession with India over presence of Indian security forces within the state over what they call alleged excesses being committed by the security forces on Kashmiri people ? Yes,they will keep on calling for shutdown while remembering these historical events. They would be calling for shutdown and total boycott of the process of election. They would do so because they have no other issue which can help them to establish their relevance and credibility. They believe silence is death for them. They believe inciting people to violence will sustain their relevance. And by doing so these separatists have been maligning the name of Kashmir muslims. A time has come when Kashmiri muslims, whether they are employed or are engaged in business or are students in various states in India, are viewed with suspicion. Whenever, any state is hit by terrorist strike these very innocent Kashmiri muslims have to face the brunt. Some of them are detailed for questioning others are beaten up and yet others are expelled from their educational institutions. This way Kashmiri separatists and even the mainstream political leaders harm innocent muslims, working or studying in other Indian states.Let this exploitation face an early end so that muslims in Kashmir are no longer viewed with suspicion. |
