DC Anantnag ignores Div Com's directions | Homeless flood affected families suffer in bad Weather | | Saahil Suhail
Anantnag, Oct 28: More than seventy homeless families in South Kashmir's Anantnag district have to brave severe winter like weather conditions as deputy Commissioner Anantnag has n't yet implemented the directions of Divisional Commissioner Kashmir. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Rohit Kansal according to official sources has directed all the Deputy Commissioners to make adequate arrangements for the homeless flood affected families living in tents. However in Anantnag more than seventy families continue to suffer due to incessant rainfall from past 24 hours. Homeless families in Anantnag's Dahruna village, temporarily living in tents told Early Times that cold weather and rainfall from past 24 hours have left them in distress and accused administration of prioritizing election preparedness than heeding their problems due to incessant rainfall. "We don't know what wrong we have did, floods have already left us homeless now this rainfall has damaged our bedding and eatables which locals and several helping groups have provided to us." said, victims. They accused administration of prioritizing election preparedness and said that despite their pleas administration hasn't took any step for accommodating them at any safer place till permanent rehabilitation. "Floods left us with only the clothes on our body, our houses stands completely damaged but the administration besides they are fully aware about our sufferings are obeying the directions of politicians." Victims said. Questioning competency of Deputy Commissioner, they said, "Can't he shift us to any safer place as we fear the winter like conditions might take lives of our kids." They said that serve cold weather is also affecting the health of their children and appealed administration to provide them adequate compensation for rebuilding their houses ahead of the winter. "We can't live in these tents more." Victims said, adding compensation of 75 thousand rupees to each affected family was equal to rubbing salt on wounds. The Divisional Commissioner confirmed that he had warned the deputy commissioners to make arrangements for the homeless families ahead of winter. "We have instructed all the Deputy Commissioner's to ensure that people who are living in tents can be protected from the cold by making adequate arrangements for their comfort before 20 days during a meeting." Div com said. He assured that he take up the issue with the concerned Deputy Commissioner. "In fact I have warned them and directed them to make arrangements as winter was nearing." He added. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Tasaduq Geelani avoided repeated calls from Early Times. Background On September 4, according to official figures the floods hit 138 villages across the district. In the affected villages 3000 houses either got washed away or collapsed completely or partially. Out of 3000 damaged houses 1884 were concrete while 1116 were kucha houses. Out of 138 affected villages the worst hit, officials said, remain 38 villages of Bijbehara tehsil and 28 villages of Anantnag tehsil. In Dahruna village over a dozen houses were completely washed away rendering 23 families homeless. |
