Srinagar, Oct 28: Complaints against 'misappropriation' in relief material by National Conference (NC), workers continue to pour in as the North Kashmir's Bandipora people today held demonstrations here to protest the ruling party's 'step motherly treatment' with the destitute people.
Shouting anti Government slogans, dozens of the villagers of Banyari Sharqi, Sumbal Sonawari and Bakerpora, this afternoon gathered at Lal Chowk and staged a massive protest demonstration against what they termed ruling National Conference (NC's) 'bounty showering' on its workers and campaigners in the District to have their services in upcoming assembly elections. The protesters alleged that the huge chunk of relief material was embezzled by the party workers while as the deserving people were kept at bay. "The devastating floods left us homeless; we are living a destitute life with our families under open sky. We have been forced to come on the roads as the relief material meant for the deluge hit families is being distributed by the workers of NC among their relatives and those who support the party in the upcoming elections," Mohammad Aslam Fafoo of Bakerpora Baniyar told reporters. He said that the people whose houses were completely damaged by the flood waters were provided with the compensation of mere Rs 1500 to Rs 3000 to rebuild their houses while those whose houses are unaffected were given a handsome amount owing to their affiliation with the party. "People of Banyari Sharqi suffered huge losses, due to the recent floods but the way the Government is treating the sufferers seems much concerned for their workers rather than lending a helping hand to us," Fafoo added.
Gulzar Ahmad Dar, another protester said that the people having influence were showered with bounties while those who lost everything in devastating deluge were left high and dry. "Tons of free rations were embezzled by the workers with the help of a local Patwari as the beneficiaries were provided with only 33 kilograms of rice against 50 kilograms announced by the Government. Moreover relief tents distributed for homeless families by the District administration too were grappled by the activists in sheer violation of norms," he said. The protesters appealed the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to personally intervene in the matter and ensure hassle free distribution of relief material among the needy. "We apprised Higher Education Minister, Mohammad Akbar Lone, about the issue but instated of directing the administration to look into the issue he turned a blind eye," Gulzar Ahmad Dar another protesters alleged.
