Poll battle begins; no pre-poll alliances, parties to fight it out alone | | | Bashir Assad SRINAGAR, Oct 28: All four major political parties NC, PDP, BJP and Congress are going alone in the Assembly election to be held in five phases starting from November 23. As principal opposition PDP followed by BJP were among the first to decide about going to the elections on their own, ruling NC was left with no option but to follow the suit because its coalition partner Congress decided to part ways with it. However, both NC and Congress facing the anti-incumbency in the state were looking for pre-poll alliance with at least smaller groups and parties. Though in Kashmir valley Congress enjoys the confidence of smaller groups like CPI (M), Hakim Mohammad Yasin of PDF, Ghulam Hassan Mir of Democratic Party Nationalist and more importantly Sajad Gani Lone of Peoples Conference, NC stands completely isolated in both the regions. Riding on a strong anti-incumbency wave against the ruling coalition, PDP and BJP are upbeat and PDP patron and former Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed formally kick-started the campaign on Monday. It merits a mention here that the political activities had come to the grinding halt for about two months after the devastating floods hit the state on September 6. National Conference which was not prepared to face the elections is yet to kick-start the election campaign. Interestingly Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah is presently in London. Back home his party seems to be very upset as its star campaigner and president, Dr. Farooq Abdullah is not keeping well. He too is in London. Ruling out any pre-poll alliance in the state, BJP yesterday said it will contest in all the 87 constituencies and exuded confidence that it would win more than 44 seats. "We won't be entering into any pre-poll alliance with any political party as we are considering fielding our candidates on all the 87 Assembly constituencies in the state," BJP MP and party in charge for Jammu and Kashmir Avinash Rai Khanna had said. "We will go beyond 44 seats and form the next Government in Jammu and Kashmir," he added. Meanwhile, Congress leadership is busy in finalizing the list of its candidates and will soon come out with the final list. |
