Ironically, no safe seat for Omar in Kashmir | | | Rustam Jammu, Oct 28: The election process in Jammu and Kashmir is in full swing. The Election Commission of India, which on October 23 announced the poll schedule for the state, today issued notification for the first phase of polling. The polling in the first phase would take place on November 25. The last date for filing nomination papers is November 5 and one of the constituencies that is part of the first phase of the Assembly polls is Ganderbal, which at present is represented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who right now is away at London. The NC has already announced three lists of candidates. Significantly none of these lists included the name of Omar Abdullah. The reason was that the poll managers in the NC could not find a safe constituency for him. They believed, and rightly, that it would be dangerous to field Omar Abdullah from the constituency he held as the political situation in the constituency was not promising for the incumbent Chief Minister, despite the fact that it was considered to be a pocket borough of the Abdullah family. There were report that the NC might field Omar Abdullah from Hazratbal, a constituency his uncle Mustafa Kamaal at present represents, as well as Sonawar. Both these seats were considered safe for Omar Abdullah, but no decision could be taken. One of the reasons was the stand taken by Mustafa Kamaal, who had said that he was very much in the race. On Monday again, the poll managers and other senior leaders of the party met for three hours to find a safe seat for Omar Abdullah, but failed. That the party's poll managers met a number of times to find safe seat/seats for Omar Abdullah, but failed is an indication of the level of the unpopularity not only of Omar Abdullah but also the party itself - party which is being described as the Kashmir premier political party. The poll managers could have decided to field Omar Abdullah from Sonawar and Hazratbal but the recent floods which also adversely impacted parts of these two constituencies in the Srinagar city upset their applecart. The people of these constituencies are seething with anger as the State Government failed them during the days of flood and thereafter. The failure of the poll managers to find any seat for Omar Abdullah is not only further marring the victory chances of Omar Abdullah but also of the party, as an impression has gone down that the NC is mortally afraid of facing the electorate. It is time for Omar Abdullah and his men and women to retrospect and find what went wrong. It's an irony that the so-called premier political party of Kashmir is finding itself in deep wate. |
