KUPWARA, Oct 28: A militant was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Tuesday morning. The exchange of fire was going on in the area till reports last came in. According to official sources on a tip of about the presence of three militants in Wderbala forests of Handwara tehsil, a joint team of police and Army launched a search operation in the area. The contact with the militants was established in the wee hours of Tuesday morning when they fired upon the search party, official said. Jammu and Kashmir Police, Special Operation Group (SOG) and Army's 30 and 31 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) tightened the cordon, they were fired upon by the hiding militants triggering the gunfight," the official added. "The militants were being challenged they opened heavy fire upon the forces the fire was retaliated ensuing a fierce gun-battle. Following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of militants there security forces surrounded the Wanderbala forest area early Tuesday, he said. Official said that, "One unidentified militant was killed in a gunfight with the security forces on Tuesday morning while an army soldier also suffered injuries in Waderbala forests of Handwara tehsil. He added that forces had launched a search operation in the forests following information about presence of militants there. Senior official sources in Kupwara district said that, it is believed 4-5 militants may have sneaked into this side of line of control (LOC) near Zachaldara sector in the beginning of the month. However official sources added that search operation would continue till all the hiding militants in the forest are neutralized. Meanwhile official added that on Monday Kupwara police along with 28-RR launched a search operation in the forest area of Anderbugh, Lolab and Watnar. During the search, a militant hideout was busted and huge cache of arms and ammunitions including one AK 56 rifle, 05 AK Magazines, 1000 AK rounds, 01 UBGL, 02 UBGL grenades, 04 pistol, 04 pistol magazines, 32 pistol rounds and 21 grenades were recovered from the hide out, official said. |
