CU organizes seminar on Dowry | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 28 : A one day national seminar on 'Dowry Murder: Gender- Prejudiced Practices in India' was organized by the Department of English and Comparative Literature, Central University of Jammu. The seminar was proposed to deliberate gender imbalanced practices in contemporary India with a special focus on dowry -related harassment in middle- class homes in Northern India. At the same time the National Seminar proposed an examination of seminal literary and cultural texts representing dowry related harassment among Indians at home and in the world. This National Seminar was not simply geared towards theoretical deliberations but a more practical, hands-on sensitization of students and faculty regarding the need to embrace gender enabled practices and create gender equity in India in particular and South Asian cultures in general. The National Seminar entitled Dowry Murder was the first among several such programmes that the Department of English organized and may justifiably lead to the formation of a Centre for Women Studies in the Central University of Jammu |
