Ladakh region reels under severe power crisis as PDD fails to procure diesel for generators | | | Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, Jan 2 : As the political parties of the state haven't reached to any agreement on the government formation, its fall outs have already begun to come to fore. With many problems already confronting people of the state, the non-availability of the government has thrown everything to the wind. The authorities in the state have been unable to arrange the diesel for generators to add to the production of the electricity. It has learnt been that Power Development Department (PDD) has failed to store the required amount of diesel in the Ladakh division which otherwise is done prior to the onset of the winter season. As Ladakh division remains cut off from the rest of the world for at least six months it is suffering for want of adequate supply of the diesel needed for the generation of the electricity. "This particular situation has given rise to many problems like the one which the people of Ladakh are facing for want of adequate supply of Diesel. This has resulted in the frequent power breakdowns and it is perhaps happening for the first time in the last many years," said Asgar Ali, a resident while sharing his views to Early Times on phone. Small power projects have also been reported to be out of order as the damage has been done to the towers. The department which is looking after the production and maintenance of the electricity, has seemingly given up its job that too when the region is experiencing coldest days of the season. Chief Engineer PDD for Ladakh division, Subash Sharma said that he has released the amount which was at his disposal to purchase the diesel for the generators. He said the purchase of diesel could not be done earlier on account of the budget which was short of the demand. "An amount of Rs 10, 20, 00,000 ` Ten crore and twenty lac) was at my disposal and against which the department has purchased the diesel which is inadequate for the whole season. Why the department has failed to store the full quota is simply for the reason of non-availability of the full funding," said the Chief Engineer of PDD for Ladakh division. It may be mentioned here that as the stalemate continues on the government formation in the state, the heads of the most of the departments have taken this an opportunity and have fled to outside the valley since they feel that they are not accountable these days. |
