Despite being rejected by people; NC, Cong see their role in next govt in state | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 2: After losing heavily in the recent assembly elections National Conference and Congress are trying their level best to be a part of the new government in the state. This is despite the fact that both these parties collectively have got less than one third of seats in the Assembly elections. Leaders of National Conference and Congress have time and again been maintaining that a secular government should be put in place in the state. Both the parties have been saying that Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) should be kept out of the power in Jammu & Kashmir. The argument put forward by NC and Congress leaders seems to be palatable for some time but in longer run. After being reduced to 15 and 12 seats respectively leaders of NC and Congress have no moral responsibility to talk about the government formation in the state. Ever since the results of the elections have come out leaders of NC and Congress have been trying to be 'kind' towards People's Democratic Party (PDP) which has emerged as single largest party in the state. NC and Congress leaders have been virtually pleading with PDP Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed not to forge an alliance with BJP. It goes to the 'credit' of Congress party of playing to the galleries by making such a demand which has been capitalized by BJP more so after the results of elections have been declared. It was a Minister of Congress who said that next Chief Minister of the state should be from Jammu region and that too a Hindu one. Blaming BJP for being the communal party does not go well with Congress more so after the demand made with respect to the next Chief Minister of the state. The Congress Minister tried his best to 'polarize' the situation in Jammu but failed to do so. He along with majority of the party candidates lost the election. As far as National Conference is concerned the party was part of the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre more than a decade ago. It's working President and present CM, Omar Abdullah who was a junior minister in Ministry of External Affairs and Minister of State for Industries & Commerce. If the BJP was not 'untouchable' at that point of time how come the party is 'untouchable' at this moment of time for PDP? Going by the differing stands one is forced to think that NC feels happy to go with BJP for forming the government in the state and takes a dig at PDP when it thinks of going with BJP for the same. The election results may have given a fractured as well as divided mandate but it has clearly depicted that neither National Conference nor Congress should have any role in the next government in the state. Leaders of both these parties should see the writing on the wall and remain aloof from the process of government formation. Instead they should think of the next Assembly elections in the state. |
