Rash driving major cause of road mishaps
People getting killed on Kathua road, enforcement agencies, MVD unconcerned

Jammu, Jan 2: Despite the presence of well equipped Traffic Police cops, one mobile interceptor vehicle, three MVD (Motor Vehicle Department) officials of Kathua, Samba and Jammu on Jammu-Kathua road, there has been no check on rash driving which has become the major cause of road mishaps.
The road accidents caused by reckless driving have been consuming numerous precious lives with each passing day.
Reports of accidents causing fatal injuries to people have been reported on Jammu-Kathua road almost daily but neither traffic police personnel nor vehicle operators, especially bus drivers, have learnt any lesson from them.
The accident near Chadwal Morh on Jammu- Kathua road on December 28, which claimed three precious lives, has also failed to open the eyes of law enforcement agencies.
Sources alleged that a nexus involving bus operators, owners, MVD officials and traffic police cops was responsible for these tragedies on roads and violation of traffic norms.
"Due to this nexus, no action is being taken against the bus operators even when their vehicles are overloaded. Overloading is one of the reasons behind fatal road accidents," sources alleged.
The speed interceptors were also not being put to use to find out the overspeeding vehicles and book their operators, sources said.
Sources alleged that on certain occasions some traffic police cops could be seen playing cards in their vehicles instead of imposing penalty on violators.
Surinder Singh, a commuter, said that according to norms the first stop of a non-stop Kathua route bus was Chadwal but the "bus operators pick up commuters after almost every one kilometre or so and then indulge in rash driving".
"In Samba city, the bus operators take seven stops in three kilometer area, which is totally unjustifiable", he said.
When contacted, Superintend of Police (Rural), Ravi Kant Sharma said that after the accident of Chadwal More in which three lives were lost, they had taken stern action against the violators and imposed fine on more than a hundred bus operators who were involved in rash driving. "We are going to initiate a special drive on this route to control the rash driving in coming days", he said.
