6 months on, govt fails to identify land for IIT Jammu | GoI pulls up state for expediting process | | Akshay Azad Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 2: The newly sanctioned Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) for Jammu province has so far failed to see daylight, as after the lapse of nearly six months, state government has failed to identify land for the prestigious institution. The Union government has recently pulled up state government for latter's failure to identify land and has reportedly been asked to expedite the process, so that the proposed institute would be made functional from session 2015-16. Sources in the Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education department informed Early Times that the IIT was sanctioned for Jammu province in the month of July, and Divisional Commissioner Jammu was asked to identify nearly 600 acres of land, free of cost at two different locations in Jammu province. "The failure on part of Divisional Commissioner Jammu to identify land has been resulting into delay in beginning of course work in the proposed IIT", sources said. They further informed that IIT for Jammu province was among the five IITs sanctioned across country including in Chhattisgarh, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kerala. "Except Jammu and Kashmir, the remaining four states have already identified the land and forwarded the communication to Union government, following which latter has also permitted these states to start course work in new IITs", sources said. Sources further said that the Union government has not been allowing Jammu and Kashmir government to start the course work, before identification of land. "Land identification is prerequisite for beginning of course work in IIT. The Union government is also not allowing state government to start course work from some hired accommodation", sources said. Sources further said that an official of Union government has recently pulled up state government for their failure to identify land. "A communication is received by Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education department recently, in which the Union Ministry has asked for expedition of land identification process", sources said. After receiving communication of Union government sources said, the Higher Education department has sought intervention of Chief Secretary Iqbal Khandey so that land would be identified shortly and IIT would be made functional. Sources further disclosed that the intervention of Chief Secretary was also essential, in view of the fact that the Union government had proposed to make IIT Jammu functional from academic session 2015-16. Pertinently, as per estimates, each of the IITs would entail an investment of roughly Rs 1,800 Crore. The 16 existing IITs now offer 10,000 B.Tech seats. The strength is likely to go up to 10,500 next year with the establishment of the new IITs. |
