Future of over 1000 GREF labourers at stake | Transfer of Kishtwar-Batote NH to R&B | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Early Times Report Kishtwar, Jan 2: After substandard work of central agency General Reserve Engineering Force commonly known as GREF has been exposed at various places all along 110 KM Kishtwar-Batote National Highway, the State government and center government last year reached an agreement under which the 118 RCC GREF has been asked to handover the Kishtwar-Batote and Kishtwar-Sinthan top roads to state Roads and Building department for execution of further construction work, but the decision has put the future of over 1000 labourers into darkness as the R&B department has refused absorb these laborers in the department while at the same time, the GREF authorities betrayed these laborers by claiming that they were not the part of the organization despite the fact that many among these poor laborers are working with the organization for over 20 years. As per the details available with "Early Times" the GREF authorities handed over Thatri-Kishtwar part of the National Highway to R&B on 31st December of last year as a result of which over 200 laborers engage by the GREF has been disengaged. At the time of disengaging these labourers, the GREF authorities did not paid any retrenchment allowance, EPF allowance or any other allowance required to be given to these retrenched laborers forcing them to choose an agitating path. According to these protesting laborers sitting on dharna outside GREF Headquarter at Kishtwar, the GREF officials disengaged their services after 89 days and re-engage after giving them one day break. They said that GREF authorities betrayed them on the name of 89 days disengagement added that on the bases of one day break; the GREF authorities denied them the monitory benefits. Later deputations of GREF laborers led by BJYM President Kishtwar Ashish Sharma called on Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Mohammad Javed Khan and seek his intervention to address the genuine demands of these disengaged GREF laborers. After giving patience hearing to the demands of the GREF laborers, the DC Kishtwar took up the matter with Divisional Commissioner Jammu and even write a detail letter to him highlighting the demands of the aggrieved GREF laborers. DC Kishtwar in his letter to Divisional Commissioner Jammu made a request for issuance to direction to Chief Engineer GREF and Chief Engineer R&B to jointly work out an action plan inbuilt in the formal handing over and taking over documents in which the grievances of the laborers working on this road for years could be accommodated. The laborers threaten agitation in case their genuine demands are not address. A deputation of BJP Muslim Morcha Kishtwar led by its President Syed Ahmed Shah also held two hour long marathon meeting with GREF authorities and warn them and the administration that in case the poor laborers were denied the genuine benefits, the party will lodged an agitation in support of the laborers. He also urged upon the R&B officials to accommodate these retrenched laborers at the time of execution of left out construction work on Kishtwar-Batote and Kishtwar-Sinthan roads. It is pertinent to mention that the road was handed over to GREF by the state government in 1990, but even after 24 years the GREF authorities fail to complete the work on this prestigious National Highway connecting Doda and Kishtwar District forcing the state government to handover the National Highway back to R&B for its speedy construction as well as its proper maintenance. |
