2 army jawans die of burns in Kupwara forest fire

KUPWARA, Jan 3: Two army personnel lost their lives and two others suatained burns when they were dousing the forest fire near Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district in North Kashmir on Saturday afternoon.
According to senior police official fire erupted in the forest area of Kanli post near the LoC in the border district of Kupwara on Thursday night.
He said that a mysterious fire took place in the forward post area due to which an ammunition dump also got damaged. Later, the fire also engulfed the nearby forest. "The fire erupted from the other side of LoC in Tangdhar area. We have lost two jawans and two others received injuries during the incident," official said.
Giving details, he said, "Soon after the fire, 5/5 Gorkha Regiment and 12 Bn of Border Security Force immediately swung into action to douse the flames. "Fire destroyed the major portions of forest trees. A joint team of forces tried their level best to bring fire under control but unfortunately two army men died due to burn injuries while two others including a BSF man were injured," the official informed.
He identified the dead as Vijay Jarang and Suresh Kumar of 5/5 Garwal Regiment (GR). Soon after the incident fire fighters from various areas of Kupwara district were sent to extinguish the fire. The fire was later brought under control.
Another report said that a suspected blast killed two army Jawans in the area.
Meanwhile, a forest fire was raging in Bonagam forest area in Haihama range of Kupwara district, the official and added that the fire started late Friday evening.
The reason of fire was not immediately known but army has launched an inquiry into the incident, the official said.
