PAhalgam, Jan 4: Dual standards of Pahalgam Development Authority stand exposed. It allows beautification of hotels despite hotel ban but refrains villagers from repairing damaged residential structures.
The locals of this tourist resort are up in arms against the Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) for allowing constructions in fragile forest zones and beautification of hotels. According to them the developmental authority has never allowed the villagers to repair his damaged residence.
A permission copy in possession of Early Times also establishes the fact where in the development authority has given permission to influential hotelier for beautifying the hotel totally in violation of the High Court directive.
Issued on 15th of December in 2014 the permission order reads, 'As approved by the Chief Executive Officer Pahalgam Development Authority applicant Mohammad Iqbal Sheikh Proprietor Hotel Pine Spring may be allowed to carry construction material for beautifying the hotel by developing the garden and path.' As reported yesterday, Mohammad Iqbal Sheikh Proprietor Hotel Pine Spring is close aide of outgoing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Accusing the authorities of granting permission to the rich and influential, the residents said, "influential persons while throwing all norms to wind are constructing huts and hotels in ecologically fragile zone full of pine trees and other vegetation and nobody has dared to touch him since years."
They said that despite the fact that are settled here since decades but the authorities under the grab of PIL are not giving them permission to repair their damaged houses. "In this winter they (PDA) officials are not allowing us to repair the roof top of our houses but is allowing hoteliers to beautify the hotels." Residents said. In Laroo Pahalgam residents appealed High Court to intervene as soon as possible as the city residents by constructing huts and hotels have endangered their existence now. "It is not only the question of environment but also of our existence. If land mafia stood with the pace of encroaching our land and forests only after few years' city residents will forces us to leave," Mohammad Ramzan argued.
They said asked PDA clarify publicly that if High Court has put a blanket ban over constructions in Pahalgam, how they are permitting affluent and influential hoteliers to carry construction works.
