SRINAGAR, Jan 3: After emerging as the two single largest parties in the recent Assembly elections in the state, leaders of People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) are busy in hectic parleys for forming the next government of Jammu & Kashmir.
While the leaders of PDP have been maintaining that the talks are going through back channel their counterparts in BJP say that formal dialogue has started. The BJP has roped in senior party leader and former Deputy Prime Minister, Lal Krishan Advani to break the ice and form an alliance with PDP.
Sources told Early Times that Advani called up PDP Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and the two discussed the various possibilities of PDP-BJP government in the state. Although, not much progress has taken place on this front, but leaders of both parties are hopeful that there would be a breakthrough very soon.
"PDP and BJP had reached an agreement under which Mufti would be the Chief Minister of state for six years. At the same time it was decided that BJP would appoint its nominee for the post of Deputy Chief Minister. But as the process lingered on differences crept and PDP Patron made it clear that there was no need of Deputy Chief Minister in the State," said sources.
Sources said that Mufti told BJP that he could easily run the government and that there was no need for a Deputy Chief Minister. This did not go well with the BJP and they are continuing with this demand. The hardened stand from both the parties led to some standstill with no forward movement.
"Of late the BJP has been demanding that along with the post of Deputy Chief Minister it should also be given the Ministries of Finance and home. According to the previous arrangement the Finance Ministry had to go to PDP with MLA Rajpora, Haseeb Drabu tipped to be next Finance Minister of Jammu & Kashmir," said sources.
Sources said that following the latest demands made by BJP, the PDP has somewhat gone slow with the proposed alliance. It was after this cold feet approach of PDP, the BJP roped in Advani and asked him to talk to the PDP Patron so that the ice is broken. Although the two leaders talked on phone, but there has been no positive news so far vis-a-vis BJP-PDP alliance.
"The PDP Patron through his party leaders has time and again asked the BJP leadership to decide about their future course of action. Mufti wants to lead the new government according to his own style of working without any interference from BJP. He has told BJP leaders that he can go with National Conference or Congress with respect to government formation if the need arises," said sources.
Sources said that it may take some more days for both the parties to strike the deal with respect to next government in the state. They said that PDP and BJP leaders would like to have the best share and for this they can wait and same has been put on record by their party presidents in the recent past.
