Why separatists were mum when NC-Congress or PDP-Congress shared power in J&K? | Shabir Shah opposed to PDP-BJP alliance | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 3: On one hand separatists in the Kashmir valley do not treat the process of election, under which members are elected to the state Assembly, as a substitute for a Plebiscite for settling the Kashmir issue, on the other they seem to have started taking keen interest in aspiring for a coalition Government of their choice and taste. These separatists have been issuing poll boycott calls and whenever people fail to respond to such calls separatists immediately issue a sermon that participation in the poll process was meant for improving road connectivity, drinking water and electricity and for meeting peoples' day to day requirements besides resolving the problem of unemployment. And well weeks before the announcement of the schedule for the December Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir separatists had repeated their poll boycott calls. And when the valley witnessed about 70 per cent polling these very separatists were quick to dish out a sermon telling the world that they had not enforced their call for poll boycott as that could have helped the BJP to gain some seats in the Kashmir province. Claiming that they have no interest in the formation of the state Government, in the process of elections these very separatists have started questioning the wisdom of the Muftis for planning to forge an alliance with the BJP for the formation of the Government in Jammu and Kashmir. By opening a front against Mufti Mohd. Sayeed Kashmiri separatists have plans of making the going tough for the PDP which had emerged as the largest single party in the Assembly with 28 seats. Out of the 28 seats it won 25 from the valley indicating that the Kashmir region was swept by a PDP wave as the region of Jammu had been swept by the BJP wave allowing the BJP to win, for the first time, 25 seats from the region. If the separatists have no interest in elections why should they dish out their opinion on the formation of the Government and that too when the Government making will have, according to the separatists, no impact on the Kashmir issue. And the Congress stance towards the possible PDP-BJP coalition is already known so is the opinion of the National Conference because the two have not been able to retain power. Several senior leaders of the state unit of the Congress have opposed Ghulam Nabi Azad's emphasis on the formation of a grand alliance among the PDP, NC and the Congress on the plea that sidelining the BJP could prove counter productive for the Congress in the region of Jammu which has a strong vote bank for the Congress. The NC leadership has come out with a statement that it was not in favour of the grand alliance when Omar Abdullah, at one time, had been seen supporting the grand alliance plan. It seems it is a saga of grapes are sour for the Congress and the National Conference because both the parties are apprehensive of the success story that the PDP-BJP Government may be able to write in Jammu and Kashmir. If the separatists have no interest in the Government formation why did they remain mum when the PDP and the Congress forged an alliance for sharing power in 2002 ? Why were the separatists silent when the Congress and the National Conference framed an alliance for sharing power in 2008 ? And why they are critical of the PDP over its plan to share power with the BJP ? Is it so because the separatists treat the BJP as non-secular? No it is not the complete story. The separatists are scared of the PDP-BJP alliance because such an alliance is expected to throw up a Government that believes in good governance. The PDP-BJP ruling alliance may be instrumental in reducing the level of human rights violations, in reducing the size of unemployment problem and that of corruption. With assured liberal financial assistance the state could taste the fruits of equitable and proper development which may make the separatists a spent up force. The Congress, National Conference and the PDP have been tested by people while they have been in power. Why should not people of Jammu and Kashmir give a chance to the BJP to be in power. Once the PDP, the valley centric party, forges an alliance with the Jammu based BJP it would lead to an end to the prolonged regional discrimination. |
