Woman killed, 9 injured in Pak shelling in Kathua, Samba districts | | | Sanjay Pathak Early Times Report
KATHUA, Jan 3: A woman was on killed and nine other civilians were injured as Pakistan targeted villages and 13 border outposts with heavy mortar shelling in Kathua and Samba districts. The fresh ceasefire violations have triggered migration from border villages and over 1600 people have been evacuated to relief camps in Samba and Kathua, officials said. The deceased woman has been identified as Toshi Devi, wife of Som Raj of Manguchak village in Samba. Her 14-year old son Rahul was also injured. "Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked and heavy firing and mortar shelling on posts and civilian areas along IB in Samba and Kathua since 9.35 pm last night," said Inspector General of BSF Rakesh Sharma. "We gave a befitting reply resulting in exchanges which stopped at 3 AM in the morning," he said, adding that Pakistan again started mortar shelling and firing targeting civilian areas since 7 AM. The firing stopped at 1 pm but again resumed around 6.30 pm in the evening, he added. He said that all forward posts in three battalion areas of Samba and Hiranagar sub-sectors in Kathua district were targeted. BSF has also issued an advisory to the border people for evacuation, he added. Several houses have suffered damage and few animals have also perished in the firing, said Samba police chief, Anil Mangotra. Four persons, including two women, were injured in Nauchak village in Kathua, said Shahid Iqbal, DC Kathua. The injured have been shifted to GMC hospital in Jammu, he said. Iqbal further informed that nearly 1200 people from forward villages have been moved into eight relief camps in Kathua district. Similarly, Samba DC, Mubarak Singh informed that nearly 500 people have been shifted into camps. One woman died and four others were injured in Pak shelling and firing in Samba district Over 550 incidents of ceasefire violations by Pakistan occurred in 2014, the highest since the truce came into force in 2003, with the Indo-Pak border witnessing the worst such escalation in October which left 13 people, including 2 security personnel dead. Over 35,000 border people were forced to flee their homes and take shelter in camps set up by the government due to heavy firing and shelling by Pakistani troops along the international border and Line of Control.
