Rajbhavan readying to meet any eventuality | | | Bashir Assad
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan7: As the deadlock over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir continues, Rajbhavan is readying for any kind of eventuality. The highly placed sources in PDP today confirmed that the talks over government formation with BJP have hit the roadblock as the latter has not responded favourably to its demands on Article 370, resumption of dialogue with Kashmiri separatists, cross LoC trade. Sources said that the talks have been suspended and the PDP was weighing other options including imposition of President's Rule in the state for some time. Meanwhile Rajbhavan according to the sources is preparing for any kind of political eventuality. Sources said that governor NN Vohra has actually got the clue from PDP president Mehbooba Mufti's conversation with him on December31. They said that immediately after that meeting Vohra started consultations with top state bureaucrats. Sources said expert opinion on certain constitutional matters was also sought by governor. Sources said in case the political parties fail to cobble up a government till January 19 when the term of the 11th state assembly expires, state may witness one more term of governor rule though for a brief period. Even though the political parties particularly PDP and BJP and NC are still weighing options, however, Rajbhavan is readying for any eventuality. Sources said though it was exactly not known as what transpired between Mehbooba and Vohra on December31, however, there are indications that Mehbooba might have conveyed in unambiguous terms her stand about not budging anything from the stated position. It is in this backdrop that some top bureaucrats who are in constant touch with Rajbhavan have been insisting that the state was readying for yet another spell of governor's rule. They said that another option before the governor is to ask the caretaker chief minister to continue in office for the time being, however, in that case the governor should be convinced that the major political parties will come up with some arrangement. Sources said in that case it depends on Omar Abdullah whether he may be willing or not to continue as caretaker chief minister. Another option is that governor's rule under article 356 of the Indian Constitution will be invoked. After six months the ground situation will be assessed and decision will be taken as to whether the state shall go for fresh elections or not. |
