PDP Patron breaks silence; expresses concern over cross border firing & shelling | Vouches for Indo-Pak friendship, condemns violence | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 7: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Patron and former chief minister of state, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today voiced his concern over the heightened tension along the Line of Control (LoC) which has witnessed firing and shelling from the other side in the recent past. The PDP Patron advocated for a dialogue between India and Pakistan and said that this alone can bring peace between the two countries. He said the people living in the border areas of Jammu who have been badly hit by cross border firing and shelling would get benefitted only when the two neighbours develop friendship and bonhomie. Expressing concern over the escalation of tension along the Indo-Pak border Mufti called for restraint and said the violence has already caused much damage to the state and its people. In a statement, he said the plight of the civilian population uprooted on either side has caused a humanitarian crisis and the situation needs to be contained before it results in more damage and destruction. "The sustenance of ceasefire along the border from 2003 had brought back peace into the lives of border residents from Kathua to Kargil. At the same time it had a positive impact on the relationship between the two countries and atmosphere of hope was generated within the state as well," said the PDP Patron. Mufti said the diplomatic and other contact channels between the two countries need to be activated to ensure that the situation doesn't escalate and it returns to normal sooner than later. He said that all options of bringing about peace should be explored on both sides of border so that the people don't suffer in the future. It would be in place to mention here that tension has escalated in many villages lying close to the border between India and Pakistan. The firing and shelling from across the border resulted in death of at least two persons including a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan in the recent past. There are reports that at least 10 Pakistani Rangers have been killed in retaliation from this side. In the recent past the PDP Patron had remained silent over the issue and some of the party leaders issued statements in this regard. Today's statement is being viewed as an important development more so when there are indications that PDP-BJP would form the next government in the state after the recent assembly elections. In the assembly elections PDP emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats followed by BJP with 25 seats. National Conference won 15 seats while as Congress managed to win 12 seats. Independents and other candidates won seven seats in the 87 member Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly. |
