BARAMULLA, Jan 7: The inhabitants of several villages of Rafiabad today staged demonstration against the shortage of Domestic LPG at Watergam area of Baramulla on Wednesday. The LPG dealers were directed by ADC Baramulla to provide LPG gas cylinders to the consumers at subsidized rate of 435.50 for the month of January.
According to sources that, hundreds of people including women took to streets in the morning and blocked Baramulla-Kupwara highway near Watergam market and raised anti government slogans. A local resident of Rawoocha Bashir Ahmad told early times that Shalimar Gas Agency has failed to maintain the regular home delivery system." There is overall shortage of (Liquid Petroleum Gas) LPG in our area from last five months and LPG has been delivered only once in the area.
Today a gas agency came to deliver gas after five months without adequate stock, we need more than 500 cylinders here but they give us 70 cylinders after couple of months now and that too in harsh winters, we didn't receive those 70 cylinders," Bashir said. Another local resident of Watergam Sijad Bhat said that, we have travel to Baramulla town to bring an LPG cylinder which consumes our precious time and energy.
People in the area were subjected to immense hardship in the absence of proper LPG stock, these gas agencies have forced us to took to the streets as we don't have any other option left except to protest against the authorities, a local said. "Mostly poor people live in this area, how they can afford to spend Rs. 250 extra as fair to reach Sopore or Baramulla towns to bring an LPG cylinder, they added.
Early times have learnt from sources that, few days back Assistant Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Riyaz Ahmad Wani had called a meeting in which it was said that a total of 1 Lakh 32 thousand of active connections of LPG are present in the district.
However the ADC Baramulla had told the dealers for smooth supply of LPG in the district and have also directed the people of the district that they should provide their account numbers before 31st January for direct cash transfer of the subsidy from February 2015 onwards as per the directions of the Prime Minister. The LPG dealers were also directed to provide LPG gas cylinders to the consumers at subsidized rate of 435.50 for the month of January, to which the dealers agreed. Meanwhile The residents were demanding immediate redress-al to their grievances. The agitating people accused gas agencies of taking people of the area for a ride and demanded the higher authorities to take immediate notice of the problem.
