Over 505 infants died in last eight months | 2 infants die daily in SMGS hospital | | Nitesh Sangral Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 7: The child mortality rate in premier Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital is quite high, as two infants reportedly die each day. According to a rough estimate over 505 infants lost their lives in past just eight months i.e from April to November ending in the Pediatric department of Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) hospital, the premier hospital in the Jammu province. The mortality rate, is mocking at the tall claims of state government, of taking necessary steps to control the increasing mortality rates of infants in the state. Sources told Early Times that on an average more than two infants lost their lives during the birth time every day, while over 50 to 55 delivery cases have been handled daily by the doctors in the hospital. Main reason for high death rate, according to the administration of SMGS hospital, is shortage of doctors and paramedical staff. According to the data available with Early Times, in 2008-09, there were 746 deaths of children reported in Pediatric department of the hospital," official sources said, adding that the hospital registered 885 deaths in 2010-11. Sources claimed that over 505 deaths have been registered in just eight months from April to ending November month, and the total deaths in one year will likely to cross previous figures. "The hospital also shortages of infrastructure to deal with the patients and on a single bed around two or three five infants have been kept one time. Even in the labour room of the hospital, more than one woman is kept on a single bed posing risk of infection to the lives of the women and their infants," sources said. They further said the lone Pediatric hospital of the Jammu province is facing tough time and may be losing its credibility among the people with the increasing risk to life of infant. Owing to shortage of staff of paramedical staff and doctors, the hospital has been facing major challenge and failed to provide quality of healthcare to the people of Jammu province. Sources said that there are 40 to 50 percent of para-medical staff posts which have been lying vacant in the hospital against the sanction strength of 546. |
