Modi's signal is awaited for resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue
4/3/2018 10:12:07 PM
The BJP is on the path of conflict with its coalition partner, the PDP.This is done to keep the people in the region of Jammu happy because majority of people in Jammu have blamed the BJP for having surrendered in front of the PDP to taste power. Despite the aggressive postures adopted by the state unit of the BJP there is no word from Prime Minister,Narendra Modi, about his support for India-Pakistan dialogue. This is so because the Government led by Modi had imposed certain preconditions to Pakistan which would motivate India for reopening the channels of talks. And top in the precondition is stop export of terror to India, especially to Jammu and Kashmir. And hitherto Pakistan has not conceded India's this demand and naturally there is no reason for New Delhi to be motivated for resumption of the process of talks.Since Modi alone can guide whether Indo-Pak talks are to be resumed or not the state unit of the BJP has nothing to lose by opposing India-Pakistan talks.Well if the state unit of the BJP believes that it can strengthen its vote bank in Jammu region by opposing Indo-Pak talks it is wrong because already,to be precise, during the last three y ears the BJP has suffered severe erosion in its vote bank in the Jammu region.
The BJP has decided to aggressively pursue its agenda in the government following criticism from its supporters for "meekly surrendering before the PDP, its coalition partner, to remain in power".The BJP's aggressive posture was witnessed during its executive committee meet at Suchetgarh, where party leadership rejected the proposal of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to hold talks with Pakistan.Amid applaud by executive committee members, Avinash Rai Khanna, J&K state in charge, said there was no reason to hold talks with Pakistan in the present situation. He said as long as Pakistan continued to support terrorism in J&K, initiating a dialogue was impossible. The BJP's rejection to a dialogue with Pakistan holds significance in view of the fact that Mehbooba had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate a dialogue process with Pakistan.Speaking at a function organised by a group of Kashmiri Pandits at New Delhi, Mehbooba had said that war was never an option. "Reconciliation is the mantra we need to follow and therefore, I request Modi ji to engage with Pakistan," she had stated. Not only Mehbooba, all PDP leaders have also been demanding dialogue with Pakistan to restore lasting peace in the region.
Meanwhile, during day-long deliberations on the second day of the executive meet, the BJP leadership realised there was anger among people and party's hardcore cadre in particular against the attitude of BJP ministers in the government and some "highly controversial" policy decisions taken unanimously by the PDP.The party, in its political resolution, also took strong exception to Chief Minister's suggestions to displaced Kashmiri Pandits that they should visit Kashmir as tourists."Kashmiri Pandits are natives of the Valley. Instead of calling them in Kashmir as tourists, steps should be taken to permanently settle them there," party resolutions said.Well Mehbooba like Dr Farooq Abdullah or Omar Abdullah are not wrong in supporting resumption of India-Pakistan dialogue. She is right when she made it clear that war is not an option. But till Pakistan concedes India's demand for stopping export of terror to Jammu and Kashmir the Indian security forces have to be told to intensify their operations against militants. And the one on the pattern of south Kashmir where 13 militants were killed though three soldiers lost their lives. But that was the reaction of people who staged protest demonstrations in which security forces .had to open fire after tear smoke and Lathi charge failed to stem the trouble.
