PDP ministers 'follow' separatists' hartal call | Scheduled events cancelled | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 3: In the wake of uneasy situation in Kashmir, the ministers from the ruling PDP have gone into "hibernation" cancelling their scheduled official programmes in Kashmir province. Officials said since Sunday, when 13 militants were killed in south Kashmir and Hurriyat called for protests, the PDP ministers have been staying away from public events and have asked the concerned departments to cancel all the events that were scheduled for the last three days. Sources said the government had to cancel at least three big functions, including the launch of a mega horticulture-based product in Kashmir. Five ministers were scheduled to attend various functions on April 2 but none of them appeared at the events. "At some places the ministers decided to skip the event at the eleventh hour putting the hosts to embarrassment," official sources said. Sources said after holding a meeting with their party colleagues, the PDP ministers decided that it was "better to go in tune with the hartal call" given by the so-called Joint Resistance Leadership or JRL. Sources said in the recent past, a group of PDP leaders have improved their relations with the separatists and don't want to displease the latter. Just last week, the state government directed the police to release the separatist leaders including Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chairman Yasin Malik from "house arrests". The trio runs the so-called JRL which claims to be "spearheading the resistance movement." After the killings in south Kashmir, including those of 13 militants, the JRL had asked people to observe shutdown for three days. |
