A 2008-like agitation in Jammu in the offing | Bar taking plunge a major development | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 3: It has finally happened. The Jammu & Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu, (JKHCBAJ) has also taken the plunge in a big way and threatened a 2008-like agitation in Jammu. The JKHCBAJ on Tuesday discussed threadbare the major issues concerning the safety and security of Jammu province and the anti-minorities policies being evolved and implemented ruthlessly by the state government and finally adopted a major resolution on four specific issues. The resolution said that the JKHJCBAJ was with the (1) agitating people of Kathua, who had been demanding a CBI probe into the alleged Murder case since months; (2) with the struggling people of Nowshera who had been in the roads for almost two months now demanding district status; against the recent directions of the state government to revenue magistracy and Police department that "they will not disturb or dislocate tribal families" from the state and forest land they had occupied illegally in Jammu, especially in Jammu, Kathua, Samba and Udhampur districts, that the police will not provide protection for eviction of these people, and that the police will not prevent the tribal community from taking bovines from one place to another. The resolution also said in unambiguous terms that the JKHCBAJ was against the presence of illegal Rohingya and Bangladeshi immigrants and that they must be deported without losing a moment. The most significant development was that lawyers cutting across political lines supported the resolution and endorsed the suggestion that there was the need for a 2008-like agitation. In fact, the JKHCBAJ started the movement during the meeting self, when the Bar leadership declared suspension of work in courts till Saturday, announced a "big meeting of civil society groups on Saturday" to chalk out a comprehensive plan for the future. The stand taken by the JKHCBAJ is a tight slap on its Kashmir-based counterpart. It's time for the BJP to refashion its whole approach taking into consideration the fact that the people of Jammu are in an agitational mode. If it fails, it will surely suffer huge electoral losses in 2019. |
