Civilian killed in security forces firing in Shopian, 50 persons injured in clashes in Kulgam | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report Srinagar, May 29: A civilian was killed after security forces opened fire on a group of people who were protesting near an encounter site at Pinjura in South Kashmir's Shopian district today. Around three dozen persons sustained injuries in the action of the security forces. Reports said that protests broke out when police and security forces cordoned off the Pinjura village after they received inputs that some militants hiding there. As the security forces cordoned off the suspected houses the militants hiding inside fired upon them and thus a full-fledged encounter ensued between the two sides. When last reports came in the firing had stopped in the village and at least two houses were damaged in the encounter. Some of the reports suggested that a militant has also been killed in the encounter however the same could not be confirmed. The slain civilian has been identified as Sajad Ahmed Parray, a resident of Badarhama, Shopian, who was part of protesting group at the encounter site. Yet another youth who identity has not been established as yet was shifted to Srinagar in a critical condition. Owner of one of the houses has reportedly sustained bullet injury in his leg. Official sources at District Hospital Shopian confirmed that Sajad succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. An official said that on specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area, joint team of forces including 44 RR launched search operation in the area. Meanwhile, at least 50 persons were injured after violent clashes erupted near the gunfight site in Kulgam village of South Kashmir today. At the same time around 20 civilians including two girls were injured in clashes at Pinjoora-Shopian. According to reports, the clashes ensued soon after the encounter broke out between militants and security forces. The clashes ensued soon after the gunfight broke out between militants and security forces at Tazipora area of Mohammadpora during the wee hours today after which youths took to streets and pelted government forces with stones triggering clashes. During the clashes, forces fired pellets, tear smoke shells and bullets to disperse the youth in which a youth identified as Yawar Ahmad sustained bullet injury while as other three youth were hit with pellets in eye. According to reports and eyewitnesses more than 50 youths were suffered injuries in the clashes after which police and paramilitary CRPF used pellets, teargas shells and live ammunition to disperse the protesters, adding that four youth were referred to Srinagar hospitals for further treatment. The injured were shifted to PHC Mohmmadpora and six of them were taken to district hospital Kulgam for treatment. The six injured have been identified as Nadeem Ahmad (pellet injury in left eye), Nawaz Ahmad (pellet injury in right eye), Adnan (pellet injury in left eye), Yawar Ahmad (bullet injury in abdomen), Mohsin Ahmad (pellet injury on body) and Basit Ahmad (pellet injury on both arms). Two others namely Mohsin and Basit are being treated in the hospital, he said. Most of them have taken properly and have been discharged, he added. Meanwhile reacting over the reports that around 60 people were injured in clashes which ensued after a gunfight in Kulgam, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that the use of brute force and pellet guns continues unabated even during the month of Ramadan. Earlier, the encounter broke out after a joint team of army's 9 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at Tazipora following credible inputs about the presence of some militants, a police official said. As the joint team of forces zeroed in the militants hiding inside opened fire triggering off a gunfight at around 4 AM. The government called off the operation after searches for several hours and no militant body was recovered, suggesting that the militants managed to escape. |
