PDP scare forces Farooq to talk secession | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 18: Like father like son. When Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah assumed power in 1947, he exiled hundreds of political activists and intellectuals for challenging the accession. But when he was dethroned in 1953, he chanted the Azadi slogan. After signing the IndIra-Abdullah accord in 1975, the accession again became final and irrevocable. The former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah is no different. In November 2007, when his party was out of power he was `deeply disturbed' by what he called "conditions created by the army" and wanted to give a second thought to the accession. Addressing the press at Jammu on the sidelines of a book release on November 19, 2007, Farooq said: "Indian Army is harming us and is weakening the stand of pro-India political parties. After killing a school teacher at Kupwara and a baker in Kulgam, we have been forced to think whether the decision of Maharaja Hari Singh and my late father to accede to India in 1947 was right." Farooq saw fractures in his Atoot Aung for the first time after joining `mainstream' politics. With elections round the corner then, Dr Farooq had to resort to resort to "bold posturing" to strike a chord in the then Qazi Mohammad Afzal's strong bastion which proved Omar Abdullah's Waterloo in 2002 elections. Farooq changed his tone after his party came to power with Congress support in 2008. Responding to Sonia Jabbar's queries during a discussion hosted by NDTV in 2010, Farooq justified NC Government's `bullet for stone' policy. "We have to use force to fight elements who challenge the totality of accession", he said. Twelve years down the line, Dr Farooq is again seeking votes. The mood of the people has been giving him sleepless nights. The fear of losing to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has once again forced him to talk of secession. Addressing an election rally on Thursday, Farooq said Kashmiris would seek secession if Article 370 is abrogated. A political analyst while commenting on Farooq's latest statement said: "Farooq must know that people in Jammu have been seeking abrogation of Article 370. Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) does not believe in the Article and has already replaced the state flag. The body now uses its own flag and the people of Kashmir are totally different. They no longer see Article 370 as a safeguard to their identity." |
