SPOs fight for their honour, right to vote; squat in protest | | | Asif Iqbal Naik Kishtwar, Apr 18: Taking their fight for the right to vote a notch higher, Special Police Officers (SPOs) who refused to proceed on election duty to Marwah of Kishtwar District a day before polling on Udhampur-Doda-Kathua Parliamentary seat continue to sit on Dharna at Dilgoot Dachhan about 400 meters away from Police Station Dachhan of Kishtwar District for last two days. As per the details available with "Early Times", even though senior police officers tried their best to pursue them to join their duties and assured them that the department will not initiate any action against them, the agitating SPOs categorically refused to perform their duties till the government allowed them to cast their vote. "Every government employee who was assigned election duty was given voting right and many of them cast their vote in respective polling stations, but only SPOs and VDCs were denied this right" said an agitating SPO. He said that on demanding voting right, senior police officers at Dachhan not only abused them but also subjected them to mental harassment and threatening to expel them from their jobs. "Enough is enough--- we would not allow the department to blackmail us anymore and let them expel us from our job" said another SPO. He said that every department like Education, PDD, Agriculture, RDD, PWD and other government departments regularized the services of their employees after 5 or 7 years and added that it is only police department which fail to regularize the services of SPOs even after 15 years of their services. He said that SPO's not only faced harassment from senior police officers, but also from regular police officials. Many agitating SPO's told "Early Times" that they will not join their duties untill and unless the department takes action against senior police officers who abuse and misbehave them, beside demanded voting rights at par with other citizens of the country. They urged upon the Chief Election Commission of India and Chief Electoral Officer Jammu and Kashmir to direct the concerned authorities to allow them to cast their votes, which is the fundamental right of every citizen of India. They also urged them to address the issue once for all so that the confrontation in future could be avoided. It is pertinent to mention that Director General of Police J & K Ashok Prashad while talking to media person at Udhampur on the eve of polling on Udhampur-Doda-Kathua Parliamentary seat informed the media persons that the issue of SPOs at Dachhan was addressed after the intervention of senior police officials, but the continued agitation on part of the SPOs clearly indicates communication gap between the top rank officials and officials on ground. |
