Winter like conditions prevail in Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 18 : Winter like conditions prevailed though summer has already started in the Kashmir valley, where intermittent rain continued during the past 24 hours resulting in drop in the temperatures. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg was colder than Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region due to fresh snowfall and rain during the past 24 hours.
A Met department spokesperson said here today light to moderate rain or thundershowers would occur at many places over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hrs.
There would be an increase in the precipitation during subsequent two days, he said and warned rain or thundershowers, accompanied by moderate thunder squalls at a few places over Jammu division till tomorrow. People woke up to a rainy morning after recording below normal temperature in the valley.
A number of roads were water lodged, making traffic and pedestrian movement almost impossible. Almost all roads in the city, including in the civil lines have been damaged with big holes everywhere, affecting normal traffic movement.
Similar reports were also received from other parts of the Kashmir valley. Due to bad road conditions at Pantha Chowk on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, traffic jam for hours has become almost a routine.
Gulmarg, which recorded fresh snowfall and rain yesterday and during the night, the minimum temperature dropped yet again and settled at minus 1.5 degree, about four notches below normal. Interestingly, the ski resort was colder than Leh and Kargil, where the night temperature was 1.7 degree celsius and 0.4 degree respectively.
Life was affected in the summer capital, Srinagar, where people could be seen wearing woollen and warm cloths and using all gadgets to keep themselves warm because of chilly winds following rains during the night.
Mechanics and other workers were seen burning wood near their place of working for heating purpose.
The Met spokesperson said the night temperature at Srinagar was 7.4 degree, about a notch below normal.
He said the maximum temperature yesterday was 14.8 degree, more than six notches below normal He said there could be moderate rain or thundershowers tomorrow and both maximum and minimum temperatures would remain below normal. The minimum temperature at Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir was 6.6 degree, about a notch below normal, Kokernag 4.5 degree, 1.5 degree below normal and Kupwara 6.8 degree, slightly below normal.
