Jammu, Aug 19: It has been more than six years since the proposal of developing a modern Warehouse in Jammu by shifting it from the existing over crowded Bikram Chowk, was moved but the project has yet to see the light of the day.
As per sources, the proposal of shifting the existing warehouse at Bikram Chowk was moved about six years back, but till date the government has failed to even identify an alternate site for giving it a practical shape.
Sources said that the government had yet to identify the land and execute the construction on modern lines with all facilities matching the latest standards at such big trading centres.
Sources said that around 600 traders dealing in wholesale of grocery items have their establishments at the existing Warehouse spread over an area of 300 kanals of land, while as per the latest standards it requires 2500 Kanal area for smooth functioning of such a big trade centre.
Sources said that initially the government had proposed to establish the Warehouse at Raya Morh near Vijaypur but nothing was heard after that adding that the land proposed was appropriate for the trading point of view as it was linked with railway line.
"At least 2 kanals area is required for each shop at a standard and modern Warehouse, while 800 kanals is needed for transport yard , besides a parking slot , bank, cold store, federation office and rest rooms for drivers and labourers are the basic requirements" sources said adding all this require over 2000 Kanals of land.
The present Warehouse at Bikram Chowk was established in 1953 in over 300 kanals of land.
The population of Jammu city at that time was 15,000 but now it has touched the mark of 15 lakhs.
Traders lamented that they have to face lot of problems due to congested space with heavy rush of vehicles often creating traffic jam in the area. "During rains, we suffer huge loss as due to lack of space we have to stack grocery items in the open" they added.
President Chambers of Commerce and Industries (CCI) Jammu Rakesh Gupta said "It was much needed demand of the traders to run their business establishment but government has done nothing in this regard except for false assurances. Six years have already passed and now we have no hope from this government."
The lack of co-ordination between various government departments to give it practical shape is the main reason that the project failed to see the light of the day, he said.
"We have also moved a proposal for demanding space for traders of City Chowk market," Gupta added.
