Modi has refused to fall in trap laid by Pakistan
8/20/2014 12:03:08 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 19: During the last several years Kashmiri separatists have been receiving invitation from Pak High Commission in New Delhi for meetings with senior Pakistani officials. Most of these separatists have been attending these meetings. Such meetings have taken place even when there was a BJP led NDA Government in the Centre. Why then the Government led by Narendra Modi reacted so angrily against such meeting that it called off the Foreign Secretary level talks?
There can be many reasons for it. The first being that it is neither the Congress led UPA Government in New Delhi nor it is the Government headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee. It is the Government headed by Narendra Modi who had started his innings as Prime Minister with a commitment to build bridges with neighbouring countries, especially with Pakistan and China.
Secondly, Modi had been peeved over the way Pakistani troops resorted to frequent ceasefire violations. Pakistani troops had opened fire on civilian houses and Indian pickets and border outposts on the LOC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir on the day when the Prime Minister had visited Kargil. The final blow to the bilateral talks was administered by Pakistan when its troops opened fire during the night hours of Sunday and Monday at 20 places in which several civilian houses were hit by mortar shells and one civilian was injured. Enough is enough was the rule followed by New Delhi. It called off the Foreign Secretary level talks that were scheduled to be held on August 25 after a two-year, long hietus.
New Delhi would have given more chance to Pakistan for creating atmosphere conducive for talks but it had to decide against resumption of talks when it had reports indicating that since Nawaz Sharif led Government was locked in a grave tussle with Imran Khan, who heads Pakistani Insaf Party and some extremists it was diverting peoples' attention by triggering conflict on the border in Jammu and Kashmir and by inviting Kashmiri separatists to Pak High Commission in New Delhi. The establishment in Islamabad wanted to create some sort of emergency situation by attacking Indian border out posts, by helping militants to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir and by inviting Kashmiri separatists to talks a few days ahead of the proposed Foreign Secretary level talks indicating that Pakistan was trying to outwit New Delhi. But Modi is a tough nut to crack. He refused to fall in the trap.
Modi wanted to send a clear and crisp signal to Nawaz Sharif that talks and terror cannot co-exist. Infact there were many important retired bureaucrats and Army officers who were against Nawaz Sharif's plan to mend fences with India and this became evident from the furious rant of these officials during discussion on Indian TV news channels.
These Pak bureaucrats and hawks among the Army and the ISI have been unhappy over the way Nawaz Sharif accepted invitation from Modi and accordingly attended his swearing in ceremony. These hawks want Nawaz Sharif to adopt pugnacious postures against Modi who is viewed by these hawks as a terrorist. Now the ball is in the court of Nawaz Sharif. Is he prepared to ignore and sideline hawks and come forward for meaningful bilateral talks?
