Situation may flare up ahead of polls: IG BSF | 'Militants desperate to make their presence felt' | | Fazal Khan
Srinagar, Aug 19: Inspector General of Border Security Force PS Sandhu today said that situation may flare up in coming days as militants are desperate to make their presence felt ahead of the state assembly polls, slated to be held later this year. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function "Pan India Plantation" here, Sandhu said, "Assembly elections are coming things will hot-up. The situation is tight. I can't predict what will happen at the LoC the next moment." "The cat and mouse game is on not only over here but even in Jammu province. There have been many encounters wherein large number of militants were killed." "All militant camps across LoC are in place and militants are desperate to sneak into this side but due to the alert troops and strong infiltration grid at place their attempts have been foiled. Pakistan usually violates ceasefire to push those militants across," he said. The IG BSF said that said militants are in state of desperation and want to make their presence felt. "Unless you advertise yourself you'll not be noticed. As they say out of sight is out of mind. Militants are doing the same," Sandhu said. "Their handlers across LoC have told militants to make their presence felt and step up their activities in the state ahead of the assembly elections. They are advertising nothing else. There number has been cut down." Asked whether calling off Indo-Pak secretary level talks would escalate militant strikes in Kashmir, he said, it would be pre-mature to talk over its direct implications. Referring to the recent attacks on the BSF men in south Kashmir, the IG said, "Last time militants attacked BSF in a village near orchard. And other time from bus stand. Our boys would have retaliated in more than equal way. But, ultimately a jawan has to ensure that minimum collateral damage takes place," he said. Asked why huge number of BSF men have been deployed in the in the state he said, "After Kargil war it was decided one agency will get one task. BSF's role in that manner is to man the LoC and the International Border in Jammu," he said.
