Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 20: Expressing resentment against the government for failing to maintain the sanctity of the historic Muslim cemetery of Kashmir, residents living around Malkhah in old city complained that a group of people were using the graveyard for gambling, boozing and black magic practicing (kalajadoo).
A group of locals while sharing details with Early Times said the graveyard has now turned out to be a safe haven for drunkards, gamblers and black magicians who irrespective of all moral and religious values were carrying out their activities without any fear or intimidation.
The locals claimed that the historic cemetery is being used for boozing and gambling while as the incidents of the desecration of graves were also reported for black magic practice. Malkhah graveyard literally known as (field of grave diggers) was reduced from 1300 to 700 kanals owing to the illegal structures erected upon by some blue eyed persons on it. The land was actually purchased and donated by a known saint of Kashmir valley for common cause. "This graveyard is being used as a nightclub by wrongdoers who irrespective of all religious and moral values carry out their illegal activities like gambling and boozing while black magic practicing is at pinnacle to harm people under negative influence (kalajadoo)," claimed Tariq Ahmad Rather a resident of Rainawari.
Tariq said that police is well aware about the menace but they have maintained a criminal silence over this serious issue.
"We cannot blame gamblers and drunkards alone for desecration of this holy land as the government has never bothered to look into this issue which has now reached to an alarming situation. This area falls under the home constituency of senior cabinet Minister who is known for his deference for religious places, but ironically he too has adopted an unjustifiable hush over this human issue," Bilal Ahmad, a resident said.
"I had gone to offer (fateha) to my mother and the moment I reached near the grave I found many of the graves empty and the bodies exhumed. When the first few caught my eye I did not think much of it because old graves sometimes become like that," said Bilal adding when I moved on I was crest fallen to see that every second grave was telling the same tale which forced to me to think that something is fishy. When MLA Khanyar, Ali Mohammad Sagar said that the issue of black magic will be seriously looked and those found involved in this practice would be dealt with iron hands. "Police has so far arrested many gamblers from the graveyard and also recovered huge amount of betting money from them. As far as the issue of black magic practicing in Malkhah is concerned I am personally looking into the issue and assure that the religious places and cemeteries will not be allowed for immoral activities," Sagar told Early Times.
