NC-Congress face off continues over refugees' issue | 'NC silent over convening Cabinet meet' | |
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 20: A major face off has again emerged between the coalition partners with the issue of Pak refugees turning out to be a major reason for the rift. According to the reports, the ruling National Conference s showing much reluctance in convening the Cabinet meet as the Congress stressed for the same in the past. Sources said that the NC leadership has unanimously decided not to allow its coalition partner to 'hijack' the issue of Pak refugees and hence has agreed to remain tight lipped over the next meeting of the State Cabinet. On the other hand, senior Congress leader while pleading anonymity told that it will not comprise over the issue of resettlement of Pak refugees and will continue to raise voice for the fulfillment of the demands. Congress maintained further that the issue of Paharais and OBCs has been its long pending demand and the resolution of those issues needs to be looked into jointly by the coalition partners. The Congress has maintained that it wants to benefit the refugees of the Pak settled in Jammu region as they have been living under 'pathetic' conditions since decades. State Congress chief Saif-ud-Din Soz on August 18 said the Government would fall if Chief Minister Omar Abdullah fails to convene a Cabinet meeting at the earliest. Talking to newsmen on the sidelines of a public gathering at Congress headquarters here, Soz said if Chief Minister fails to convene the Cabinet meeting or if the Coordination Committee meeting was not held, Government would fall as it would have no constitutional validity. The State Congress chief had on Saturday asked the Chief Minister to convene a Cabinet meeting to take a call on reservation of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and other important issues. A day ahead on August 15 function, Omar had announced reduction of electricity duty by 12 percent and declared reservation of 5 percent for Pahari speaking people and 2 percent for OBCs. Soz said he had not issued any threat to the Chief Minister, but being the State president of Congress and chairman of the Coordination Committee urged him to convene a Cabinet meeting so that pending issues like reservations of OBCs and increasing wages of Numberdars could be taken up. |
