Srinagar, Oct 29: The district authorities Wednesday exhumed the body of a man, who had died of alleged medical negligence last week, in the frontier district of Kupwara.
The body of the 38-year-old Ghulam Mohammad Lone, son of Abdul Gani of Lone Mohalla, Anderhama Muqam-e-Shahewali, was exhumed this afternoon in presence of civil administration, police officials, including Tehsildar Drugmulla, Mohammad Maqbool, and senior doctors of the district hospital, Handwara, officials told on Wednesday. The body was later taken to the district hospital Handwara, where doctors conducted post-mortem on it.
Father of four, Lone had died at the sub-district hospital a day after he was operated upon by doctors for chest pain on October 20. His death had triggered massive protests in the area prompting the district officials to order a probe into the allegations of negligence by doctors.
"I had ordered exhumation on the demand of the relatives of the deceased. The family sought investigation into the case. So heeding to their demand, the body was exhumed today," Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Kupwara, Farooq Ahmad Rather said.
After exhumation, he said, the doctors conducted post mortem at the district hospital. He said a team of forensic experts from Government Medical College Srinagar had also taken the samples for examination.
"Strict action will be taken if the allegations turn out to be true. Anyone found guilty, won't be spared," he added.
Meanwhile, hundreds of villagers took to streets and staged strong protests against the health department when Lone's body was exhumed.
The protesters were demanding stern action against the 'negligent' doctors. After legal formalities, reports said the body was again buried at ancestral graveyard Lone Mohalla Anderhama area of Muqam-e-Shahewali.
Besides the district authorities, the health department has also ordered a probe into the allegations. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kupwara, Dr Munir Ahmad Khwaja has constituted a three-member team comprising Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone (A-Grade Specialist Surgeon), Dr Mohammad Ramzan (District Tuberculosis Officer and Physician Specialist) and Dr Iqbal (B Grade Physician Specialist) to probe into the alleged incident. |
