Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 29: Amazingly, a woman's cremation at Jogi Gate here was on Tuesday delayed for over 40 minutes after "some" security personnel, who were accompanying some politicians in the funeral procession of Capt Dewan, ADC to the last Dogra ruler, Maharaja Hari Singh, did not allow her body to be carried to the pyre which was next to that of Dewan. It so happened that when rituals were being performed on the body of Dewan before consigning it to flames, the body of a woman was too brought there for cremation. Those, who were carrying the body on their shoulders and the mourners accompanying them, faced a great difficulty to push through the people who had gathered there in hundreds to pay their last homage to the Maharaja's ADC, according to eyewitnesses. However, when some people got to a side and made way for the woman's funeral procession, "some" security personnel appeared on the scene and stopped them from moving forward. The reason given by them was that they ought to wait till "Dewan Sahib's" was consigned to flames. They had no option other than following their "diktats". The eyewitnesses said the woman's cremation was delayed for over 40 minutes. When contacted, Bodh Raj, manager of J&K Sewa Samiti, which manages the Jogi Gate Shamshan Ghat, said a total of four bodies were brought yesterday for cremation. Two were cremated in the afternoon and two in the evening, he informed. He said Capt Dewan's body was cremated at about 4.30 pm or so. When the rituals were being performed on his body, the body of one Radha, wife of Prem Chand of 14, Janki Bhavan, Nagpur, was also brought there for cremation, he added. "There was no delay on our part to cremate the woman's body but if they were stopped by someone, that is not in our notice," Bodh Raj said. The woman's family members could not be contacted as there was no mention of their any contact No in the death register of Sewa Samiti. |
