Early TImes Report

JAMMU, Nov 10: The ruling coalition comprising sub-regional and leaderless National Conference (NC) and the issueless and directionless Congress is withering away at an alarming speed. And if this trend continues for some more days, these two outfits would become a story of the past. They and their government have lost the confidence of the people across the state and their top leadership is mortally afraid of facing the angry electorate.
NC working president and outgoing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has abandoned his own Ganderbal constituency convinced that he would be defeated by the electorate in case he sought reelection from this constituency, considered Abdullah family's strong bastion. He is now seeking election not only from one but two "safe" constituencies of Sonawar and Beerwah.
This should indicate his failure even to nurture his own constituency. A leader who cannot face the electorate of his own constituency just cannot lead his party to victory. The story of the Congress, which can hobnob with and ditch any political party for power, is no different. It is also leaderless. Its top leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saif-ud-Din Soz have fled away from the electoral arena. Both declared days ago that they will not contest the assembly election. They did so as they were convinced that they would suffer a defeat in case they took the plunge to taste political waters in the state. And they are lading the election campaign of their party.
The leadership of the NC and the Congress has become so unpopular that even senior leaders of these parties are quitting the ruling coalition and joining either the BJP or the PDP. During the past more than two weeks, many senior leaders of the Congress and the NC have changed sides and the number of the Congress and the NC leaders and their supporters joining the BJP or the PDP is multiplying with each passing day. And people join only those parties which, they believe, are the front runners or which are all set to capture political power. In other words, the leadership of the Congress and the NC has failed to keep the flock together, thus further damaging their poll prospects and making things quite easy for the BJP in Jammu and Ladakh and PDP in Kashmir. These developments have only led the general population to believe that the Congress and the NC are sinking ships and it would be better to leave it sooner than later. The developments which have been unfolding since weeks now must make the leadership of the Congress and the NC sit up and find what has gone wrong with their parties and find why those who worked for these parties for decades are quitting them and joining those parties which they used to criticize and condemn. Of course, it is a fact that all those who are quitting the Congress and the NC are not genuine political leaders and that they are deserting them to further their own personal interests. But it happens in politics.
