Fake lottery operators: SMSs tell people they have won huge amounts | | | Majid Nabi
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 10: Impostors continue to 'rip off' the people in Kashmir by assuring them that they have won a 'jackpot' worth lakhs and entice them to deposit money to receive their winning amount by divulging some of their vital details like credit card number and Email Id. In reality, these messages of congratulations people get on their cell phones can often signal the start of a scam nightmare, leaving people out of pocket or at risk of identity theft. Consumers are often told that they have won a large amount of money through overseas or online lottery and are encouraged to supply personal information and share their bank details to receive the won amount. They are also warned to keep their achievement a secret and told they may lose their winnings if they don't claim 'jackpot' immediately. The fraudsters can then use the vital information given by the consumer to steal both money and identities. Tahir Ahmad, son Mohammad MaqboolWani a medico of Botashah Mohalla Lal Bazar, claimed that he had been receiving calls on two of his mobile phones since April 2014. One of calls he received, wooed him after he came to know that he had won 27 lakh rupees in the 2012 BT Mobile Draw. To claim the prize, he was asked to send rupees twenty thousand to the account given by the person he was approached by to receive his winning amount. "I got a call that I have won rupees 27 lakh in BT mobile draw and the person who informed me about the lottery asked me to deposit rupees twenty thousand and also cautioned me to keep the matter secret. It was really a jovial moment for me as I instantly went to the bank to deposit money but luckily one of my friends there informed me that I am going to lose my money as the call I receive was nothing but a trick to grab money, "Tahir said. Abdul Manaan, a B.tech student of Aanchar Soura, claimed that he received a message on his mobile phone on June 14 reading " Your mobile No: has won 1.2 Million Pounds in the 2014 Nokia Award. For claims send your Name/ADD/Mobile No/ Email to [[email protected]]. "I did not pay any heed to the call instead I advised other people to be cautious of fake calls. People rather than falling prey must investigate whether the person who is calling is genuine or not," said Manaan. Probes in similar cases in the past have revealed that victims are contacted both through mobile, sms and e-mail claiming that they have won lottery and should send sensitive information to an e-mail account generated by the gang. |
