NC rebel challenges his former boss

Srinagar, Nov 10: As the elections are coming closer the National Conference rebels are opening up and are bringing to fore the "misdeeds" of their masters.
The NC rebel, Mohammad Yousaf Bhat, who recently joined Congress and was nominated as the party candidate from Ganderbal today declared that his former boss (Chief Minister Omar Abdullah) shifted his constituency from Ganderbal to Sonawar and Beerwah as he knew that he would face a humiliating defeat in the Assembly segment, which he represented for six years.
Bhat, who was the chief campaign manager of the NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah in 1987 elections, while talking to Early Times described NC as a "sinking ship," which has no future in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Mark my words, this party will vanish from the history of Kashmir as smoke vanishes in air. People of Ganderbal are feeling sorry for electing Omar in 2008 as all promises turned out to be blatant lies" he said.
Recalling 2008 Assembly elections, Bhat said, "Omar came to me and pleaded that he should not once again face the defeat as he faced in 2002. All of us assured Omar that we would work day in and out to ensure that he wins. We kept up our promise and were instrumental in ensuring his victory."
Bhat said that soon after he won the elections he (Omar) turned his back towards the constituency and forgot the people who worked 24X7 to elevate him to the top post. "His promises about turning Ganderbal into model constituency, visiting the area every week and other claims proved to be a hoax. The people whom we had approached to seek votes for Omar curse us even today," the NC rebel said.
He claimed that had Omar contested from Ganderbal this time he would have faced the worst defeat in the history. "After he (Omar) came to know that I am contesting on a Congress ticket from Ganderbal he shifted his base," Bhat added.
Bhat alleged that National Conference disgraced its loyal and grass root level workers. "Thousands of NC loyalists are disheartened at the approach of party leadership. Such people are calling the shots who have done nothing for the party," he said. "They appeared on the scene after NC came into power in 2009."
Bhat said that people of Ganderbal recently rejected the National Conference in the Parliamentary elections. "The NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah managed to get only a few votes from the constituency. People have already rejected the party," he added.
Taking a dig at the NC patron, Dr Farooq Abdullah, Bhat claimed that once upon a time he was close confidant of the NC patron. He alleged that for the "sake of power and chair" Dr Farooq turned Kashmir into hell.
"I was close confidant of Farooq Abdullah and after that I remained in constant touch with Omar Abdullah. I am witness to the fact that in 1987 how Dr Farooq forced the Returning Officer to declare him as a winner from Ganderbal. Farooq had lost 1987 elections by a big margin, but senior Abdullah used his power and influence and declared himself as winner," he said, "Abdullah family cares a fig for the people of Kashmir and the only thing that matters for them is power and position."
Bhat said, "After the 1987 elections, crackdown against the youth was launched on the directions of Dr Farooq. I don't have any desire or any ulterior motive. Being the witness to all this I want to make it public that the directions came from Dr Farooq to suppress and arrest the people who had dared to challenge the authority of National Conference in 1987. Then Public Works Minister late Ghulam Mohiuddin Shah directed some Police officers to torture selected youth."
He said when New Delhi rejected the Autonomy proposal passed by National Conference Government in the Legislative Assembly hundreds of workers approached Dr Farooq and requested him to resign. "Dr Farooq showed thumb to his supporters and yelled that we want chair not jail," Bhat said.
